DRIPPING SPRINGS – Both Boerne Champion soccer squads were eliminated from the postseason Tuesday in their opening-round playoff matches against Leander schools.

The Lady Chargers were in Dripping Springs and knocked out by the Leander Lions, 3-0, while the Champion boys played at Leander Rouse and were edged by the Raiders, 1-0.

Varsity Girls

The Lady Chargers finish the year at 11-10-2 overall after Tuesday’s defeat.

It was 2-0 at halftime and a goal by the Chargers in the second half would have made it interesting but Champion couldn’t capitalize on any of its opportunities.

“It would have been nice to get one,” said head coach Alyse Zingelmann, who is in her first year with the Chargers. “We knocked on the door a little bit but couldn’t convert.”

The Lions added their third goal with three minutes remaining to seal it.

Zingelmann said her team competed well.

“This wasn’t how I wanted it to end, but I’m proud of these girls and how they fought,” she said. “They didn’t stop and had them on the run until the end. I’m definitely proud of the work that they put in.”

Seniors are Reagan Burkey, Ava Slay, Ashlyn Defries, Mia Farias, Ashlyn Plank, Mack Arendall, Sam Weltens and Ava Godoy.

Varsity Boys

Champion and Rouse looked like they might go to overtime but the Raiders converted a late goal for the 1-0 lead that held until the end.

The Chargers conclude the season with a record of 13-5-3.

Tuesday’s match was 0-0 for the first 72 minutes but Rouse was awarded a penalty kick and converted with eight minutes left that proved to be the game winner since it was the only goal tallied all night.

An injury on the back row with 26 minutes left was costly to the Chargers.

Seniors this year are Tanner Perkins, Brian Davis, Liam Willis, Seth Roberts, Lucas David, Ryan Ruggiero, Ben Matamoros, Hayden Landis, Matthew Duran and Scott Grover.

Despite the early exit from the playoffs, Chargers head coach Clifton Tierney said he was proud of the year they had for a lot reasons.

“We had a lot of success this season on and off the field. A lot of our seniors are top of their class and will be attending some of the top colleges,” he said. “I’m looking forward to next season and having another successful year.”
