An accident Tuesday morning in the 38500 block of eastbound Interstate 10 left 48-year-old Kerrville resident Jeremy McGee dead.
At about 6:50 a.m., reports showed a truck driver on I-10 reported a woman driving a black SUV struck McGee on the highway, killing him. While the Boerne Police Department still is investigating the incident, officials believe McGee may have been checking on the items he was hauling, accidentally stepping into the main interstate lanes.
McGee was driving a commercial vehicle and hauling trash bins for Republic Services, which is a waste disposal company with a location in Kerrville.
“It was really shocking, it could be any of us truck drivers who are on the road all the time,” a witness who was driving a commercial vehicle for a Houston company told The Star. “It’s really shocking, the situation.”
Investigators found the truck McGee was driving stopped on the right-hand shoulder of the interstate, information from the Boerne PD stated. The truck’s headlights were on and a right-side blinker flashing. However, the emergency flashers were not activated.
It was still dark at the time of the incident. Sunrise is at about 7:30 a.m.
“At this time, the investigation continues to show that the driver of the SUV did not strike the truck,” the BPD information states. “There was no damage to the commercial truck and the damage to the SUV was consistent with the impact from Mr. McGee.”
According to information from the police department, the driver who struck McGee immediately pulled over and remained on the scene until officers arrived shortly after. The driver was notably upset, information stated, and officials said she was treated by emergency medical technicians as a precaution.
While the investigation into the incident is still underway, officials with BPD said officers didn’t suspect the driver who struck McGee was impaired, and she continues to cooperate with police in their investigation. At this time, BPD does not expect any charges to be filed against the driver.
McGee was pronounced dead by Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Freida Pressler. Next of kin has been notified. McGee has a daughter in Kerrville, according to court records.
One lane of eastbound I-10 remained closed for several hours on Tuesday while officers conducted their investigation.
While officials with BPD said motorists should remain aware of their surroundings when driving or when pulled over on the side of the road, drivers should remain on the scene should they find themselves in a similar unfortunate situation.
“In all instances, everyone needs to be aware of their surroundings, especially when driving or pulled over on the shoulder of a road or highway,” information from BPD stated. “Should any-one find themselves involved in an automobile accident or an auto-pedestrian accident, they need to remain at the scene and call 911. If they are able to safely render aid before first responders arrive, that is encouraged.”
This is Boerne’s first traffic fatality of 2022, information stated.
