One tough inning proved costly to the Boerne baseball team and resulted in their first loss in district play last Friday when the Greyhounds hosted Wimberley.
The Texans plated 4 runs in the top of the sixth — and only had 1 hit in the inning — and went on to defeat the Greyhounds, 7-6.
BHS is 14-6 overall and last Friday’s setback leaves them at 4-1 in district. After playing each team once through the first round so far, they’ll play every team twice each week going forward.
Boerne hosted Bandera Tuesday and visits the Bulldogs Thursday. Next week, they’ll play Fredericksburg twice.
In last Friday’s game, Dylan Perez started things off with a solo homer to put BHS on the board in the first. The Hounds added another run in the inning after Ryan Hooper hit into a fielder’s choice to bring in Reese House and it was 2-0.
Wimberley answered with 3 runs in the top of the second and scored 2 of those runs thanks to a double for the 3-2 lead.
Boerne retook the lead in the fifth after a Walker Hill two-out double scored House and Hooper and the Greyhounds were ahead 4-3.
The game went to the bottom of the fifth and that’s when Wimberley had its big inning, most of it with 2 outs.
Three walks, followed by a single — Wimberley’s only hit of the inning — pushed in 2 runs and put the Texans back on top 5-4 for the fourth tie or lead change of the game.
After that, an error, a hit batter and passed ball allowed Wimberley to score 2 more runs and increase its lead to 7-4.
But the Greyhounds were able to trim Wimberley’s advantage to a run in the bottom of the sixth. Hutson Hendrix doubled, moved to third on an error and later scored on a passed ball and it was 7-5.
Perez later scored on a Jace Preston ground out and the lead was down to one run at 7-6 before the Texans could end the threat.
After Wimberley didn’t score in the top of the seventh, BHS had one last chance to tie or win it.
Hill singled and Hendrix walked to put two runners on with two outs but that’s where the rally ended after pop up to shallow right was caught in foul territory for Boerne’s third out to end the game.
The Hounds outhit the Texans, 9-4, and were led at the plate by Perez, who homered and scored twice, while Hendrix doubled, walked and score a run and Hill doubled and singled, walked and drove 2 runs.
House singled, took 2 walks and scored 2 runs, Preston singled and drove in a run, Hudson McNew singled, Hooper singled, walked, pushed in a run and scored a run, while Grant Tamplet singled.
Jackson Grimes went 5 innings on the hill and left without a decision. He gave up 3 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 walk and struck out 7.
Tanner Tuschinski faced 7 batters and struck out 1 and yielded 1 hit and 2 earned runs, while Eli Srp ended the game on the hill and went 1.1 innings. Srp walked 1 and didn’t give up a hit or a run.
