Elizabeth Leachman’s sensational sophomore season continues after the Champion distance runner won another national race and set another national record in the process.
Leachman recently competed at the 2024 Nike Indoor Nationals in New York and took first place while setting a new national record in a girls high school 5K race.
The Charger sophomore posted a time of 15:28.89 in her 5K race to break the old record by nine seconds. Katelyn Tuohy held the former mark of 15:37.12 set in 2018, according to MileSplit. Tuohy just turned professional and was a national champion while at North Carolina State.
While in New York, Leachman also competed in the 3200 race the day before her 5K and clocked in at 9:44.15 to set a meet record with that time.
It’s been quite a school year for Leachman. She was the district, regional and state champion in cross country and then won the Foot Locker national race last December in California to close out 2023 .
Once 2024 started and the spring track season began, Leachman has posted the three fastest national times in the 3200, with her time of 9:43.74 the current national record for girls high school runner.
Later in the year, Leachman will look to defend the state championship she won last year in the 3200 in Austin.
