Boerne VFW Post 688 recognized two local responders with the 2024 Public Safety awards during their March 12 meeting. Boerne Police Department Detective James Vela and Kendall County EMS’s Jeffery Ziegler were presented with certificates of achievement in the ceremony. Ziegler began with the county in 2017 after 16.5 years in the U.S. Navy with tours that included Operation Iraqi Freedom, Kuwait Persian Gulf War and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, receiving a Purple Heart while serving. Vela has been with the Boerne PD for almost 25 years, becoming the BPD’s first canine officer in 2002. He later spent six years as a task force officer with the DEA.
