The soccer season came to an end for the Boerne Champion boys last Friday at home against Buda Johnson.
The Chargers and Jaguars played to a 3-3 tie to leave Champion at 6-9-5 overall and 5-8-3 in 26-5A. Champion went into the final week of the season and had to win both games last week to have a chance at the postseason, but it lost to Kerrville on Tuesday, and that sank any chance.
“They knew it came down to Tivy, that was the biggest one right there,” Chargers coach Clifton Tierney said. “We were tied 1-1 at the half and when our senior centerback goes down, he was a guy we didn’t have to replace all season long. At that point we kind of got exposed a little bit. They understood the situation and understood what it meant.”
There are 11 seniors on the team, but Tierney added that a lot of his younger players saw action this year.
“We had three sophomores and a freshman out there, so four out of the six field players were freshman or sophomores,” he said. “We were able to get them minutes and they look better than they did at the beginning of the year. It was definitely a learning experience for them, and the good thing is they’re going to be so much greater for it.”
Seniors are William Manarpaac, Mario Cervantes, Nico Cordero, Ricky LeBell, Gabriel Hernandez, Noah Sherman, Will Wallace, Calvin Perryman, Danny Martinez, Jack Weltens and Camden Vicknair.
Champion held three leads in Friday’s game but Johnson hit the equalizer goal three different times and that’s where it stayed.
Hernandez finished with 2 goals on Friday and Cordero had the other goal, while Perryman and Crew Pulliam finished with assists.
