The Champion softball squad opened 26-5A action Tuesday at home against Wagner and turned in a strong performance against the Lady Thunderbirds.

The Lady Chargers run ruled Wagner, 15-5, in five innings and head coach Bethany Holtorf said she was pleased with their performance.

“It’s a great start to district,” she said. “We’re 1-0 and I couldn’t be happier.”

Champion is 7-5-2 overall and visited Veterans Memorial Friday. They’ll host New Braunfels Canyon and Kerrville Tivy next week during spring break.

Wagner had a fast start and scored 3 in the first, but Champion matched that and it was tied at 3-3 after one.

The Thunderbirds scored a single run in the top of the second, but the Lady Chargers again answered with 3 runs to pull ahead 6-4 and they never trailed after that.

Champion’s defense only surrendered one more run the rest of the way, while the Charger bats came through in the later innings and helped push across 5 runs in the fourth and 4 more in the fifth to end it with the mercy rule.

The Lady Chargers swung the bat well and finished with 3 triples, 2 doubles and 9 singles as they racked up 14 hits.

Abby Brehmer hit a triple, 2 doubles, drove in 2 runs and scored once, while Dakota Salazar finished with 4 hits, 4 runs scored and an RBI.

Lillian Ritchie tripled and singled, pushed in a run and scored 3 times, Marlena Spurrier tripled and scored, Torin Tucker singled and scored 3 times, Mylie Parker singled, pushed in a run and scored 2 runs, Jaycee Bendele singled and collected 2 RBI, while Madison Coker singled and scored.

Ritchie picked up the win from the circle and went 4 innings. She gave up 2 hits, 1 earned run, walked 3 and struck out 1.

Parker tossed an inning and yielded an unearned run but no hits or walks.

Things will get tougher in 26-5A and Holtorf said playing with consistency will help as they look for a playoff spot.

“We just have to have good at bats, play flawless defense and execute when we have runners on bases,” she said. “It’s going to take us playing our best.”
