It’s getting down to crunch time for the Boerne Champion boys and girls soccer teams.
This was the final week of district play and there are still a few things up in the air for the Chargers as they headed into Friday’s 26-5A finale.
Both Champion teams tangled with Smithson Valley Tuesday. The Lady Chargers hosted the Lady Rangers and played to a draw and the boys were at SV and lost to the Rangers.
They closed out district play Friday against Seguin. The boys hosted and the girls were on the road.
Varsity boys
Champion couldn’t get its offense going and was kept off the scoreboard for only the second time this season.
The Rangers defeated the Chargers, 2-0, to hand Champion its second straight loss in 26-5A.
The Chargers are 6-4-3 in district and 11-4-3 overall. They needed a win Friday at home against the Matadors to clinch a playoff spot and will either be third or fourth with a victory depending on other district matches.
The Chargers were in fourth place heading into Friday, just ahead of New Braunfels Canyon, who is 6-5-2 in district.
The top four teams in each district make it into the playoffs.
Varsity girls
Champion and Smithson Valley played to a 1-1 draw Tuesday at Charger Field.
The Champion girls have already clinched a playoff spot but are playing for seeding.
Tuesday’s tie dropped the Lady Chargers to fourth place in 26-5A.
Champion is 9-3-1 in district (10-8-2 overall) and tied with New Braunfels Canyon, but the Cougarettes own the tiebreaker over the Chargers since they swept them this season.
Canyon closed out the regular season Friday against Wagner and the Chargers were at Seguin.
In Tuesday’s match, Daylynn Carpenter tallied the team’s only goal on the assist from Ashlyn Defries.
