March is Irish-American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the many accomplishments and contributions those of Irish heritage have made to build our nation. Statistics show that nearly one in 10 Americans are of Irish heritage, with 1.9 million residing in Texas.
Historians note that Irish Americans started coming to what is now the United States in the early 17th century, the descendent of one of whom contributed to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Increasing numbers of Irish people came to the new nation, with an estimated 4.5 million arriving between 1820 to 1930. A great many came during the Great Irish Famine of the 19th century, seeking a better life than the one of abject poverty and disease they left behind in Ireland.
Theirs has not been an easy immigration to our nation, with Irish immigrants often challenged by extreme poverty and prejudice. Yet the immigrants persevered, and buoyed by indomitable spirit and ingenuity, they helped build and strengthen our nation. From laborers to artists, politicians to performers, each and every Irish-American of past and present is to be honored not only in March, but for all times.
Inishfree School of Irish Dancing
We are delighted to once again showcase a performance by the Inishfree School of Irish Dancing at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 26.
The Inishfree School is a competitive one, with locations throughout the United States and abroad in Belfast. Inishfree dancers consistently place highly in regional, national and world levels. Combining fleet-footed combinations with toe-tapping Celtic tunes, Inishfree performances never fail to thrill audiences.
The dancers regularly perform at a variety of venues that have included performing with The Chieftains, Spurs’ halftime performances, Good Day SA, on the Riverwalk, the San Antonio Highland Games, the San Antonio Folklife Festival, the Austin Celtic Festival the North Texas Irish Fest and corporate events. As noted on the school’s website, while the dancers consistently have won championships, the objective of the school is not just to produce champions, but to continue to pass on, to its students of all ages, the traditions and joy of Irish dance. Our lives are enriched immea
Our lives are enriched immeasurably through the sharing of cultures. As we sample the music, dance, literature, cuisine and philosophies of other peoples, we grow in global awareness and appreciation. We see, too, that notwithstanding our differences, there is much that we share.
The depth of our commitment to tolerance – not the height of our walls nor locks on our doors – will best ensure a world of peace for all humanity.
