Last Saturday turned into a record-setting day for the Lady Chargers swim team after they earned 6 state medals and finished 3rd as a team at the 5A meet held in Austin.
Champion’s boys team had a great day as well after they claimed 2 state medals and placed 8th in the final standings.
The school earned 8 medals — 6 for the girls and 2 for the boys. The girls earned 1 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze and the boys earned 1 gold and 1 bronze.
The 8 medals is the most combined, the 6 medals earned by the girls is the most in one year at state and the 3rd-place finish is the best-ever by a Charger swim team.
What’s even more impressive is that the Champion girls rewrote the record books with only four swimmers after Kate Deykin, Kate Canales, Cameron Kellogg and Cora Skoog were the only Lady Chargers to qualify for the swim portion of the meet. (They did have one diver qualify in Jada Green.)
The Champion girls held the lead at various times in the meet and ended up 3rd with 164 points. Frisco Reedy won the event (194) and Lamar Fulshear (191) was 2nd as at least 55 teams scored a point.
Champion coach Scott Slay said he knew the girls were capable of a strong showing.
“I thought it was possible to make a run like that,” he said. “However, it’s very difficult to achieve and everything has to break just right.”
Girls
The Champion girls started off the meet with a gold-medal performance in the first race of the day after Deykin, Canales, Kellogg and Skoog took 1st in the 200-yard medley relay with a 1:46.15.
The fantastic four claimed silver in the 400-yard free relay after recording a 3:32.44, while Canales mined for silver in the 100yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.61.
Skoog earned bronze in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.76. Skoog also placed 3rd in the 100 freestyle after touching the wall in 51.48, while Canales picked up bronze in the 100 butterfly after posting a 56.19.
Kellogg finished 5th in the finals of the 200 individual medley at 2:09.29 and Deykin was 5th in the consolation finals with a 2:12.07 to both earn points.
Kellogg also placed 5th in the consolation finals of the 100 breaststroke with a 1:08.88 and Deykin was 6th in the consolation finals of the 100 backstroke after posting a 1:00.01, while Jada Green finished 18th in diving with 223.60 points.
Boys
The Champion boys were 8th with 102 points where at least 50 teams scored a point. Like the girls, the boys team did it all with only four swimmers.
Champion swam to gold in the 200-yard freestyle relay after William Tolar, Jake Canales, Will Harrison and Bexon Harrison combined for a 1:25.27 for 1st place.
Coach Slay said the 200free relay came a long way from where they started.
“I would say the surprise of the season was the emergence of our boys 200-free relay,” he noted.
Bexon Harrison earned the team’s other state medal after he picked up bronze in the 50-yard freestyle in 20.65 for 3rd, while William Tolar came in 6th in the race at 21.30 to earn team points.
Colin Breuer almost medaled and finished 5th in 1-meter diving. Breuer was consistently in the top 5 after each round and was 2nd on a few occasions before placing 5th with 469.80 points to score 14 points.
Bexon Harrison clocked in at 50.53 in the 100 butterfly for 5th, Will Harrison was 5th in 100-yard freestyle consolation race with a time of 48.24 and William Tolar placed 8th in the same race after clocking in at 48.70.
