Law enforcement officials arrested a motorcyclist Feb. 27 after he ditched his bike and fled across Interstate 10, only to be captured a short time later.
Boerne police officers responded to a call of a motorcyclist — later identified as Bryan Pena, 35, of San Antonio — driving recklessly and turning into oncoming traffic on FM 46 west of Interstate 10 at about 2:45 p.m.
Police first encountered the biker after he turned into the Home Depot parking lot before he took off, fleeing onto I-10.
Officers gave chase, only to see Pena nearly crash in the median as he attempted to reach the westbound lanes. The biker crashed the bike and fled on foot.
Police followed, chasing him after he jumped a fence at the Land Rover Boerne dealership in the 32000 block of I-10 West, according to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office service call report.
An officer reported seeing the male on foot in the 100 block of Old San Antonio Road near Cascade Caverns Road. At 2:56 p.m., the biker had been detained and all units were redirected to that location.
The subject was transferred to an area hospital at 3:40 p.m. before his eventual booking into the Kendall County Detention Center shortly after 7 p.m.
Pena is charged with possession of a controlled substance between 1-4 grams, evading arrest/ detention with a vehicle, and reckless driving. He is being held on two $100,000 bonds.
Two Boerne Independent School District schools near the arrest site were put on brief lockdowns during the chase.
Bryan Benway, Boeren ISD communications director, said Boerne Middle School South was placed on “secure and hold” status.
“As a precautionary measure, and for the safety of our students and staff inside (Boerne Middle School South) was placed on a ‘Secure and Hold,’ formerly called lockout,” Benway said.
While in Secure and Hold, no staff or students are allowed outside of the school until the pending situation is resolved, Benway said, halting outside classes, recess, physical education, etc.
Benway said the hold was brief, possibly around five minutes in duration.
The police report also listed Kendall Elementary School as releasing a hold.
