Spartans end Boerne’s outstanding playoff run

Spartans end Boerne’s outstanding playoff run

The Boerne High boys had won the last three Region IV-4A titles and were looking to making it four straight, but that remarkable run ended last Friday at the hands of Stafford.

The Spartans knocked the Greyhounds from the 4A playoffs in their second round contest Friday in Cuero, 66-43. BHS closes its year at 30-6.

Ironically, it was Stafford that eliminated the Greyhounds in 2020 during the regional finals before Boerne started its run of winning three straight regional titles.

Stafford won by 23 points Friday but the game was much closer than that until late in the contest. The Spartan lead was only 8 points early in the fourth at 45-37 after a Casen Hoegemeyer bucket.

But unfortunately for Boerne, that’s as close as the Greyhounds would come to catching the Spartans.

After a 2-pointer by Hank Hendrix in the fourth, it was a 10-point game at 51-41 with three minutes left, but Stafford scored the next 15 points to pull away at 66-41.

Luke Fox ended the run with a late bucket to make it 66-43 and from there, the Spartans just killed the clock and didn’t shoot.

Stafford never trailed in the game and the only time it was tied came at 3-3 early in the first quarter after Sam Holland hit a 3-pointer.

Holland had a great first quarter and had 10 of their first 12 points in the opening period. The senior drained three 3s in the third quarter and finished with five 3-pointers in the contest on his way to 19 points.

Boerne really struggled in the second and only scored 3 points on a Hut Hendrix bucket and a Fox free throw.

Stafford held a 15-12 lead after one, but took a 27-15 advantage into halftime after winning the second quarter, 12-3.

The Spartans kept a double- digit lead until the Hounds cut it to 8 points in the fourth quarter before Stafford pulled away with their late run.

Besides Holland’s 19, Hank Hendrix finished with 9, Fox scored 6, Hoegemeyer netted 5, while Jaxon Baize and Hut Hendrix both chipped in with 2.

Seniors this year are Gus Addington, Luke Fox, Noah Patton and Sam Holland.
