The Boerne Champion varsity soccer squads took on New Braunfels Canyon last Friday and both matches were tightly contested and could have gone either way.
In the boys match, the Chargers and Cougars battled to a draw, while NB Canyon edged the Lady Chargers by a goal.
Both Champion teams tangled with Kerrville Tivy Tuesday and then play Pieper Friday as they continue District 26-5A action.
Varsity Boys
Boerne Champion and New Braunfels Canyon played to a 1-1 tie.
NBC scored first but the Chargers tied it in the second half thanks in part to the courtesy of the Cougars after Canyon knocked an own goal into their own goal.
The Cougars scored their goal on a penalty kick 18 minutes in. That was Canyon’s only shot on goal all night as it turned into a defensive struggled between the teams.
Champion is 10-2-3 overall and 5-2-3 in district. The Chargers do pick up a point with the tie since a win is worth 3 points and a tie is worth 1 in 26-5A.
Varsity Girls
The New Braunfels Canyon girls were able to take the season series over the Lady Chargers with a 2-1 victory Friday in Boerne.
The Cougarettes complete the sweep over the Champion girls after they won their first-round meeting, 3-1.
Champion drops to 8-2 in district with both losses coming to NBC, the only team in District 26-5A that has defeated the Lady Chargers this year.
Champion is 9-7 overall and Friday’s loss snaps their six-game win streak, their longest of the year.
Daylynn Carpenter had the Chargers’ only goal on the assist from Lily Alejo
