The Boerne Champion boys began postseason play Tuesday against Cedar Park and used a strong second half to pull away from the Timberwolves.
The Chargers held a four point lead at the break but doubled up the Timberwolves over the final two periods, 28-14, on their way to a 51-33 win.
Champion hits the 30-victory plateau and faced an old foe in the second round when they squared off with Alamo Heights Friday in San Antonio.
It was tied at 2-2 early on Tuesday and that was the only time the Chargers didn’t lead in the game.
Baeden Burdick had a strong start for the Chargers and scored their first four points and had five of their first 10 points to help Champion jump out to a 10-2 lead.
Champion opened up a double-digit advantage at 12-2 but Cedar Park went on a 7-0 run and the lead was down to three at 12-9.
The Chargers responded after Quinn Grable converted
a 3-point play and Briggs Jones nailed a 3-pointer right before the end of the first quarter and the lead was back to seven at 19-12.
Both teams struggled in the second and Champion only mustered 4 points, while the Timberwolves dropped in 7 and it was a four-point game at halftime, 23-19.
That’s when the Chargers turned it up a few notches. Grable and Jones hit back-to-back 3s and Charlie Georgelos added a 2-pointer for an 8-0 spurt to start the third and open up a double-digit advantage at 31-19 before taking a 10-point lead into the fourth (38-28).
Once the final stanza began, Grable hit a 3-pointer and was fouled. He made the free throw for the rare 4-point play and Champion had a 42-28 lead.
Grable added another 3 — his fourth of the half — as part of an 9-2 run and the lead ballooned to 17 points to basically put the game out of reach.
The Chargers won the final stanza, 13-5, after winning the third quarter, 15-9.
Grable finished with 19 points, Jones added 13, Georgelos scored 9, Burdick tallied 7 and Mason Wyatt finished with 3 points.
