An 18-0 spurt to bridge the first and second quarters in Monday’s third-round playoff game gave the Boerne girls all the momentum they needed against a solid Navasota team.
Boerne held a 38-8 lead at halftime in Georgetown before closing it out by doubling up the Lady Rattlers with a final score of 50-25. Navasota ends its year at 30-4.
The Lady Greyhounds (31-4) advance to the fourth round or regional semifinals this Friday in Kingsville where they’ll face the winner of the Devine – West Oso contest scheduled for Tuesday.
Friday’s winner plays Saturday for the Region IV-4A championship and a berth at the state tournament.
Boerne held Navasota to just two points in that second quarter during their run and those two points didn’t come until there was about a minute left before halftime.
“I thought in the second quarter we did a really good job of controlling tempo and doing just what we needed to do,” BHS coach Amy Ruede said. “Our goal was to try to keep them out of the paint and I thought the kids executed well, Navasota is a talented team. I was just proud of the kids and the way they executed our game plan.”
The Lady Hounds knocked down seven 3-pointers in the first half, with five of those coming in the second.
Averi Aaron hit both of their 3s in the opening quarter and then made another in the second, while Abby Smith drained two of them, along with single 3s from Jenna Ruede and Meredith McLeod.
Boerne battled foul trouble in the second half and didn’t play like they did in the first half, but it didn’t matter with a 30-point lead by halftime.
Navasota outscored BHS in the third, 10-8, and also won the second quarter, 7-4, but Boerne still won by 25.
Aaron led all scorers with 16 points before fouling out late in the game. Smith scored 12, Ruede and McLeod both netted 7, Chloe Donnell scored 6 and Mickena Randle hit for 2.
Vs. Iowa Colony
It was a matter of experience vs. youth in last Friday’s playoff game between Boerne and Iowa Colony and experience won out after BHS won 53-27.
The Lady Greyhounds have been to the state semifinals twice in the last three seasons and Iowa Colony is a brand new school just in its second year.
The Pioneers had three sophomores and two freshman in its starting lineup, while BHS had two seniors that signed college scholarships.
Boerne raced out to a 19-8 lead by the end of the first quarter and then the whole experience/inexperience thing really manifested itself.
Iowa Colony only scored 3 in the second and 5 in the third as they kept shooting long-range shots that weren’t going in.
Boerne netted 15 and 13 over those same two periods and held a 34-11 lead at halftime and took a 47-16 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The Pioneers played hard until the end and took the fourth quarter, 11-6.
Boerne’s two senior starters, Averi Aaron and Abby Smith, combined for 31 of their 53 points. Aaron tallied 16 and Smith had 15.
Chloe Donnell netted 9, Jenna Ruede finished with 5, Mickena Randle and Meredith McLeod had 3 each and Addison Palluch scored 2.
