For the first time in her Boerne High coaching career, girls basketball coach Amy Ruede had the chance to host a playoff game at Greyhound Gym. That opportunity came Tuesday when the Boerne girls welcomed Gonzales to open the 4A playoffs. Prior to Tuesday, every other playoff game that Ruede had coached in had been somewhere else.

The Boerne girls made the most of their home-court advantage Tuesday and defeated the Lady Apaches, 81-13.

Boerne improved to 30-4 overall and played Iowa Colony in the second round Friday in Yoakum. For results, see the Boerne Star.

Ruede said it was a thrill to finally coach a playoff game on their home court.

“It was nice, I was super excited,” she said. “Everybody that comes during the regular season got to come watch us and our seniors got the chance to play another game at home. I was fired up.”

Boerne played like they were fired up after they jumped out to a 38-3 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Averi Aaron had 12 points in the opening quarter, Abby Smith scored 10, Chloe Donnell tallied 9 and Meredith McLeod added 5 to all outscore the Apaches by themselves.

Smith said they were excited to be at home in the first round. “It was amazing getting to play at home with our fan base and with our family and friends here,” she said. “It calmed our nerves going into it because it’s home and it’s comfortable and what we’re used to.”

Boerne won the second quarter, 13-1 and took a 51-4 lead into halftime.

Once the second half started, Gonzales only mustered two points in the third period while BHS tallied 16 to open up a 61-point advantage, 67-6.

All the BHS starters were out by the fourth quarter and the Lady Apaches turned in their best stanza of the night in the final stanza with 7 points, while Boerne knocked in 14 points to close it out.

Coach Ruede said she was happy that 12 girls suited up and all 12 saw action and 11 of them scored.

“This game was good because everybody got to play,” she said. “We pulled up some JV kids and they got to get some minutes and some of the kids that don’t score a lot had the chance to get some shots up and score.”

Smith totaled 17 points, Aaron and Donnell scored 16 each, McLeod added 13, Shelbie Porter recorded 5, Savannah Salinas and Addison Palluch chipped in with 3 points apiece, while Jenna Ruede, JT Hernandez, Addison Pape and Mickena Randle all netted 2
