Champion softball drops defensive battle to Floresville

Boerne Champion was in a defensive struggle when the Lady Chargers opened the 2024 softball season Tuesday in Floresville.

The Lady Tigers won a tight one, 4-2, to start Champion at 0-1 this year. The Lady Chargers were in the Ingram Tournament this weekend.

Champion took a 1-0 lead in the first after Torin Tucker led off the inning with a single. She moved to second on a sac bunt and advanced to third on a wild pitch. From there, Tucker scored after she stole home.

Floresville got on the board in the bottom of the third with 3 runs to take the lead. A single, walk, error and double pushed in the three runs and the Tigers were leading 3-1.

Champion answered with a single run during its next at bat after Abby Brehmer singled to start the top of the fourth. With two outs, Alison Kory singled to score Brehmer and the Floresville lead was down to one at 3-2.

The Lady Tigers were able to get that run back in the bottom of the fifth after they scored a runner from third on a ground out and their lead was 4-2.

Champion couldn’t score in its last two at bats and that’s where the score stayed, 4-2.

The Chargers outhit the Tigers, 6-5, but Champion also committed 6 errors to go with its 6 singles.

Tucker and Kory knocked out 2 singles each, Salazar and Brehmer both knocked out one hit each.

Lillian Ritchie and Mylie Parker both pitched for the Chargers and went three innings each. Neither gave up an earned run and Ritchie walked two and Parker struck out one.
