Comfort: Alumni baseball, fish fry, poetry and Hold’em

Comfort: Alumni baseball, fish fry, poetry and Hold’em

This monthly column usually involves a theme of related items pertinent to Comfort, that we share with the readership of the Boerne Star. This month, however, our topics are a little bit of this and that: sports, community information, acts of kindness, culture, and good ole Texas fun.

The first item takes place Feb. 17; that’s today, if you are a Boerne Star online subscriber.

The event is the third annual Comfort High School vs. Alumni baseball game, held in support of the Comfort High School baseball program.

The game starts at 2 p.m. and promises to be a great opportunity to see how the alumni players hold up against the younger set. Come early and enjoy a barbecue lunch by donation, prepared by parents of current players. There will also be a home run derby at 1 p.m.

We just enjoyed the Super Bowl; now it’s time to don your baseball cap, come out to Comfort High School, and enjoy what may well be your first baseball game of the season. There is no admission charge for the game, and the weather might be just about perfect.

Next, we want to promote a community meeting to discuss the Highway 27 Rehabilitation Project.

Driving into Comfort can be a bit problematic at several points along TX 27, and the Texas Department of Transportation is coming to town to present information on a proposed project beginning at 6 p.m. Feb. 28 in the Comfort Library Learning Center, at Seventh and High streets.

This is a chance to get in on discussion about this important traffic matter. So, circle Feb. 28 on the calendars and join us.

Now for a double header ... maybe even a triple. Plan to spend your evening in Comfort beginning at 5 p.m. Feb. 23 for the 8th annual Lent Fish Fry at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 114 U.S. 87 in Comfort.

The menu includes bitesize cod, French fries and coleslaw, and all by donation. You may eat your dinner in the outdoor pavilion on the church grounds or take it home to enjoy.

And while you are at the church, bring along your new or gently worn shoes for the annual Shoe Drive. It is surprising to learn that millions of people do not have adequate — or in some cases, any — footwear.

Sacred Heart is collecting all those shoes you don’t wear and sending them to countries for folks in need. There are large boxes at the church entrances where you can drop them on the way to pick up that great fish.

What a deal! And if that were not enough, there is one more event to keep you in Comfort: our monthly poetry reading in the Ursa tasting room at Branch on High, 704 High St. It begins at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 23 and will feature international best-selling author, Julie Barton. She will share her poetry and the story of her memoir, “Dog Medicine.”

Many of our personal stories involve someone, or something, that had a significant impact on our lives. Come and enjoy Barton’s thoughts and stories, along with a lovely glass of Ursa or Bending Branch wine. All are welcome.

And last but not least, we want you to know about the fun things you can do at the Cocky Rooster Bar, 1014 Front St. Owner Wendy Jiminez has put together an entertaining array of events to enjoy: Monday, 7 p.m., dart tournament; Tuesday, 8 p.m., Texas Hold ‘Em; Wednesday, 7 p.m., Corn Hole tournament; and Thursday, 7 p.m., Texas Hold ‘Em.

There is no doubt that you will find Comfort to be a town with much to offer. We look forward to seeing you soon, as you find Comfort in Texas.
