Chargers, Veterans Memorial tangle for district title

Boerne Champion held off Wagner Friday night in boys basketball to stay in the mix for a chance at a district championship.

The Chargers edged Wagner, 42-38, to stay one game behind Veterans Memorial.

Champion is 12-1 in District 26-5A and Veterans Memorial is 13-0 entering the regular-season finale. The two met Tuesday at Charger Gym to determine the top seed in the district.

Wagner is third in the district at 8-5, while Pieper (6-7) and Seguin (5-8) are battling for that last spot heading into Tuesday.

Wagner was up 10-8 after one but the Chargers outscored them in the second, 10-7, to take a one-point lead into the break, 18-17.

It was a tight game and both Champion and Wagner tallied 12 points in the third and the Chargers still maintained a one-point edge going into the fourth quarter, 30-29.

There wasn’t much separation in the final period but the Chargers were able to stay ahead. It was 34-31, 37-34 and then Champion held a 40-38 lead with just five ticks on the clock.

The Chargers closed it out with the final two points to get the 4-point win.
