With questions like, “Name a house you never want to be in” and “Name a dish or an ingredient you’d find in an expensive restaurant,” the stage was set for two evenings of amusement and entertainment as the curtain rose on Boerne Family Feud.
Veteran performer Philip Chancellor, who takes Family Feud on the road, was a lively host for the Feb. 9 and 10 shows at the Boerne Community Theatre. He matched the energy of the teams and audience and set the tone early with wisecracks and jokes.
Like the long-running television show — featuring hosts such as Richard Dawson, John O’Hurley and current mainstay Steve Harvey Boerne Family Feud pitted two teams against each other in an attempt to accumulate points based on answers to questions or fill-in-the-blank sentences.
Friday night saw five teams compete, including Kendell County EMS and the Boerne Fire Marshals. Despite a close run between all teams, the final battle came down to the Boerne police and Boerne firefighters.
Buzzers and laughter rang out as the two teams tried to best each other to win the coveted trophy and bragging rights.
The police department prevailed, and Police Lt. James Schmidt and panel (Sergeant Lisa Rowe, Officers Ryan Cook, Eduardo Murillo, and Edward Collazo) came out ahead of the firefighters in a hotly contested last round.
Schmidt said that the best part of the evening, apart from beating the fire department, was hearing the hilarious answers to the questions.
Chancellor did read out a note from the losing fire department congratulating the police department for their win, concluding, “P.S., pray to God your house never catches on fire.”
Saturday night included members from local restaurant Epicure, the Boerne Community Theater board of directors, the BCT Teen Troupe, Dracula Barks (a combination of the two play titles the members represented), and the Carner family.
The Carner family, relatively recent transplants from Minnesota, watch the Game Show Channel frequently and came into the evening prepared to have fun but determined to win.
Epicure came out strong, as did the BCT board, who seemed to be sure-fire winners, but the Carner family turned the tables on them. The final round of the evening was a stand-off between the members of Epicure and the Carners.
The last question of the night was, “Name a musical instrument an octopus would rock at.” The Carners won the buzzer and took the question. Piano, drums, and flute were some of the guesses, but the final guess that clinched them the championship — bagpipes.
Tune in next year when the Boerne P.D. and the Carner family return to defend their Family Feud title.
