Boerne Champion played two district softball games this week, and while they struggled at times, the Lady Chargers managed to win both games.
On Monday, the Chargers defeated Veterans Memorial in 11 innings and on Tuesday, Champion edged Lehman by a run.
The Chargers are 8-4-1 overall and 4-1 in 26-5A. They visited Seguin on Thursday.
Vs. Lehman
Tuesday’s matinee was close until the very end but the Chargers prevailed at home, 9-8.
Lehman scored 2 runs in the top of the first and added 3 in the second, while the Chargers plated a run in the bottom of the first to give the Lobos the 5-1 advantage after two innings.
Champion had a big at bat in the bottom of the third and scored 5 runs to take the 6-5 advantage. They followed that up with 3 more runs in the fourth frame and it was 9-5, but Lehman made a comeback and scored 3 runs in the top of the fifth and the Champion lead was down to a run at 9-8.
Neither team scored after that, but in the top of the seventh, Lehman put two runners on with one out, but the next two batters were retired with a strike out and a pop up to Ashley Ottmers at second to end the game.
Ottmers had a great day at the plate and hit a triple and 3 doubles, picked up 3 RBI and scored 3 runs. Carmen Vela hit 2 singles and scored twice, Krista Tarver also hit 2 singles and pushed in 2 runs, Gabi Vela singled, scored and drove in a run, Ava Trevino singled, Finley Shanley hit a single and drove in a run, Riley Murrish hit 2 singles and scored twice and Kassidy Kureska scored a run.
Trevino picked up the win on 129 pitches and went all 7 innings. She struck out 3, walked 2 and gave up 4 earned runs.
Vs. Veterans Memorial
Champion visited Veterans Memorial on Monday and took a 12-9 lead into the bottom of the seventh but the Patriots tied it with 3 runs in its final at bat in regulation to send it to extra innings.
Neither team scored until the 11th when the Chargers exploded for 10 runs to blow it open at 22-12. Veterans didn’t score in the bottom of the 11th and the Chargers claimed the 10-run win in a game that took 4 hours to complete.
Champion had 25 hits in the game including a triple and 2 doubles from Ashley Ottmers who finished with 5 hits in the game, 3 RBI and 4 runs scored.
Krista Tarver hit 3 doubles and a single and collected 5 RBI, Ava Trevino doubled, hit 2 singles, scored twice and pushed in 3 runs and Gabi Vela doubled and knocked out 3 singles, drove in 2 runs and scored twice.
Carmen Vela had 2 hits, Finley Shanley hit 3 singles and scored twice, Lily Ritchie hit 2 singles, collected 3 RBI and scored 3 runs, Riley Murrish crossed home plate 4 times, hit 2 singles and drove in a run, Kassidy Kureska scored twice and Jaycee Bendele plated a run.
Carmen Vela went all 11 innings in the circle and tossed 226 pitches. She gave up 10 hits, 10 earned runs, struck out 13 and walked 9.
