Schertz John Paul II gave the Geneva School of Boerne boys basketball team all they could handle Friday night in the second round of their district tournament, but the Eagles prevailed by four points.
Geneva claimed the contest, 50-46, and improved to 22-6 overall and 9-1 in district.
Because they won the first two games of the district tourney, the Eagles are off until Friday when they host Brentwood Christian for the tourney title.
Both teams had a fast start last Friday and the Eagles were up 15-12 after one, but JP II had a strong second quarter as well and dropped in 15, while Geneva was held to 8 points to give the Schertz school a 27-23 lead at halftime.
Geneva turned the tide of the game in its favor in the third quarter after they held JP II to 3 points, while the Eagles netted 14 to open up a 37-30 advantage.
John Paul II made a strong push in the fourth quarter and had its best-scoring period of the night with 16 points but Geneva kept pace and tallied 13.
JP II started fouling in the final period and the Eagles were up for the task after they went to the freethrow line 12 times and sank 8 to finish 11 for 15 in the game.
Colton Lutz led all scorers with 19 points and went to the line nine times and made seven free throws. Lutz was 5 for 6 at the line in the final stanza.
