Champion boys stay in hunt for district title

The Champion boys basketball team stayed in the hunt for this year’s 26-5A district title after the Chargers hosted Smithson Valley Friday night and defeated the Rangers, 51-38.

Champion is 27-4 overall and 10-1 in district. The Chargers are one game behind front-runners Veterans Memorial in the 26-5A standings. The Patriots are 11-0 in league play.

Champion visited Seguin Tuesday and plays Wagner Friday before closing out the regular season Tuesday, Feb. 13, at home against Veterans Memorial in what could be for the district title.

In last Friday’s game vs. the Rangers, Charlie Georgelos was good at the free-throw line and went 11 for 11 on his way to 18 points.

Baeden Burdick, Quinn Grable and Briggs Jones all chipped in with 8 points, Mason Wyatt tallied 5 points and Cole Rina scored 4.

Wyatt and Georgelos both dished out 3 assists, while Georgelos led the team in rebounding with 8 boards. Baeden Burdick grabbed 6 boards, while Jones and Wyatt pulled down 5 rebounds apiece.
