Tuesday’s district contest at Pieper between the Champion boys and the Warriors turned into a defensive struggle.
Points were hard to come by but the Chargers prevailed 42-32 to stay in the hunt for the district title.
Champion improved to 26-4 overall and 9-1 in district. The Chargers were home Friday to host Smithson Valley and will be at Seguin Tuesday. Champion is second in the 26-5A standings behind Veterans Memorial squad that is 10-0 in district.
It was Veterans Memorial that handed the Chargers their only loss in district so far. Champion hosts the Patriots Feb. 13 in the last game of the regular season in what could be for the district title.
Before that, the Chargers still have to face Wagner on Feb. 9 but Champion did defeat the Thunderbirds in the first round.
In Tuesday’s game, Briggs Jones had the hot hand and led the Chargers in scoring with 19 points, Charlie Georgelos added 7, Mason Wyatt scored 5, Baeden Burdick and Logan Scott both netted 4 and Kristian Herrera had 3.
