Champion kicked off the second round of boys basketball Tuesday night by hosting New Braunfels Canyon.
The Cougars played the Chargers tough for a half but Champion prevailed to make it a sweep of NBC this year.
Champion won the game 62-50 and also took their first meeting on Dec. 30, 45-41.
The Chargers are 24-4 overall and 7-1 in district. Champion was home Friday to host Kerrville Tivy and then visits Pieper Tuesday.
NB Canyon had a strong first half and was leading 23-18 late in the second. Champion’s Charlie Georgelos finished the half with a 3-point play after he scored and was fouled.
Georgelos made the free throw and the Chargers had trimmed the lead to 23-21 at the break.
After that, Champion pulled away with a strong second half. They outscored the Cougars in the third, 23-12, and held a 44-35 lead by the end of the quarter.
The Chargers were letting it fly from the outside and knocked down five 3-pointers, three from Georgelos who completed the rare 4- point play after he was fouled on a made 3-pointer shot and swished the free throw.
It was Georgelos’ 4-point play that gave Champion a 30-27 advantage and they never trailed from there although the Cougars had a fast start in the fourth and outscored Champion 6-2 to start the quarter and made it a 5-point game at 46-41.
Quinn Grable ended NBC run with the team’s only 3 of the fourth quarter and pushed the lead back up to 8 at 49-41 with five minutes left.
From there, the Chargers clinched it with its foul shooting after they went to the free-throw line eight times in the final two minutes and made six of them.
Georgelos had a strong game with 26 points, Briggs Jones added 15, Burdick and Grable both scored 8, Mason Wyatt and Logan Scott had 2 points apiece and Kristian Herrera made a free throw.
