Geneva boys are victorious on Senior Night

The Geneva boys were at home last Wednesday against Austin Veritas for Senor Night and on the road Friday in Schertz against John Paul II and won both.

They’ll travel to Hill Country Christian Friday to close out the first round of district.

Geneva is 19-6 overall and 6-1 in district.

Vs. Veritas

The Eagles defeated Veritas on Senior Night, 61-54.

Geneva tallied 17 and 15 in the first two quarters, while Veritas hit 16 and 13 for 29 points and was trailing at the break, 32-29.

In the second half, Geneva opened up a 10-point lead late in the third, but the Austin school went on a 5-0 run to cut the lead in half.

The Eagles steadied the ship and maintained its lead in the fourth quarter despite only going 3 for 10 at the free-throw line.

Geneva hit for 17 in the period and Veritas scored 16.

Philip Cannata paced Veritas with 30 points and had 13 of those points in the fourth quarter.

Eagles coach Julius McNeal said a win is a win, especially on Senior Night.

“It wasn’t the prettiest game we’ve played but it’s a win and in district play, they all count,” he said. “We’re happy to come away with another win and to win one for our seniors. Those four guys have been a very big part of our program and I’m so blessed to be able to have them in my life. They’ve helped us build upon the culture here and they’re the first class that I’ve been able to coach all four years of high school, so they will always be a special group to me.”

Seniors are KP FitzGerald, Jack Taylor, Griffin Freiling and Malachi Strizu.

Colton Lutz led the team with 19 points, Freiling added 16 points, Wyatt Bruss scored 13 and Taylor had 12 as four Eagles were in double digits, while FitzGerald hit a free throw.

Vs. John Paul II

The Eagles defeated the Guardians of Schertz John Paul II on Friday, 56-31.

Geneva was up 20-12 at the end of the first quarter and took a 36-20 lead into halftime after doubling up the Guardians in the second, 16-8, with all 8 JP II points coming from one player.

The Eagles won the second half, 20-11, to close it out.

Wyatt Bruss led Geneva with 21 points, Colton Lutz added 20, Caleb Quitadamo scored 5, KP FitzGerald and Malachi Strizu added 3 points apiece, while Griffin Freiling and Jack Taylor had 2 each.
