Boerne Champion split its two girls basketball games last after they fell at Wagner last Wednesday before bouncing back to defeat Veterans Memorial Friday night before a good-sized crowd at Charger Gym.
The Lady Chargers are 3-6 in district and 10-20 overall. They are on the road for two games this week. They were at New Braunfels Canyon Tuesday and visit Kerrville Tivy Friday.
Vs. Veterans Memorial
Friday’s 55-40 win over the Lady Patriots gives the Lady Chargers the sweep over Veterans Memorial this year.
Champion coach Jason Sanders said he appreciated the crowd that showed up to cheer on the Chargers.
“Friday night was a great atmosphere and it was great to see support from the cheerleaders, football team, softball team, as well as having over 40 middle school girls in attendance,” he said. “We have an amazing booster club that provided pizza for our athletes and all the middle school athletes.”
The Chargers were up 13-9 after one quarter and then outscored the Patriots in the second, 16-12, for the 29-21 halftime lead.
Both teams scored 9 in the third and Champion was leading 38-30, before they closed it out with a strong fourth quarter after outscoring the Lady Pats, 17-10.
Hailey Winn led the Chargers with 16 points and 13 rebounds to record a double-double.
Abby Sommer added 15 points and Adriana Barreiro and Bralyn Gault scored 8 points each.
Gault grabbed 15 rebounds, Barreiro snagged 8 boards and Ainsley Darter had 4 rebounds.
Barreiro tallied 4 assists, Ainsley Darter had 3 assists and Gault dished out 2 assists.
Barreiro and Ainsley Darter came up with 3 steals, while Addison Darter, Winn and Gault all recorded 2 steals each.
Vs. Wagner
Wagner won 78-34 and had a fast start last Wednesday. They were leading 25-7 at the end of the first quarter over the Lady Chargers and from there, the Thunderbirds won the second, 14-9, and took a 39-16 lead into the break.
Wagner outscored the Chargers in the third at 17-8 and opened up a 56-24 advantage.
Champion closed it out in the fourth with their best scoring quarter of the night with 10 points but the Thunderbirds dropped in 22 to wrap it up.
Hailey Winn and Taylor Burk both netted 10, Kayla Ramirez, Addison Darter and Jenna Koepke all chipped in with 3 points, Cris Ramon and Bralyn Gault dropped in 2 each and Adriana Barreiro hit a free throw.
