Chargers almost upset No. 2 ranked Veterans Memorial

Boerne Champion almost caught a big fish Friday night and came close to upsetting the No. 2 team in the state.

The Chargers were at Veterans Memorial Friday and played them tough, but the Patriots pulled out a 41-31 win.

Both teams were undefeated in district leading up to the contest so it was Champion’s first loss in 26-5A.

The Chargers are 6-1 in district and the Patriots improve to 7-0. Champion is 23-4 overall and at home this week for two games. They began the second round Tuesday against New Braunfels Canyon and host Kerrville Tivy Friday.

Vs. Veterans Memorial

Champion played the Patriots tough through all four quarters and were actually leading at halftime.

Charlie Georgelos led the Chargers with 17 points at the break as Champion held a 21-19 lead at halftime.

The Pats won the third quarter 11-4 and took a 30-25 lead into the fourth.

It was a four-point game in the middle of the fourth quarter with the Patriots leading 32-28 and then Vets Memorial closed out the game with a 9-3 run to get the 10-point win.

Georgelos finished with 21 points, Quinn Grable added 6 and Baeden Burdick had 4 as only four Chargers scored in the game.

Their second-round district game with the Patriots is set for Feb. 13 in Boerne.
