THE BOOKWORM
CAREN CREECH
I currently have three cats, one hedgehog, two “feral” cats from a cat colony, and two cats I’m pretty sure belong somewhere else but still come around each day for their second and third breakfasts.
Through the years my menagerie has included various dogs, cats, ducks, roosters, and a Welsh pony. Also due to an unfortunate incident when I was 12 and my Pekingese walked inside the house with a baby possum attached to his long hair, I also had a possum that thought I was its “Mom.”
There must be a big sign that follows me around and reads “easy mark,” with an arrow pointed at my head and is only visible to our four-legged, furry, and feathered friends. And although I don’t need to add to my current menagerie, I do like reading inspirational books and stories about other animals and their people.
“Funny Farm: My Unexpected Life with 600 Rescue Animals” by Laurie Zaleski is a recent publication. It’s the author’s love letter and tribute to her mother, who while raising several kids as a single mom still managed to rescue many dogs, cats, and other animals.
Zaleski is a graphic designer who purchased a 15-acre farm in New Jersey in 2000 and developed the Funny Farm Animal Rescue. The book is an inspiring story of a daughter following through on her mother’s dream.
“The Cat Who Covered the World” by Christopher Wren is an older title, but very interesting for the period it covers, and the places visited in the book.
Henrietta the kitten was adopted by the family of Wren, a New York Times foreign correspondent.
