Lady Chargers close out 1st round of district with win

The Champion girls basketball team closed out the first round of district play Friday with a solid road win at Seguin.

Champion posted a 64-45 victory “behind some nice offense and great defense,” according to coach Jason Sanders.

The Lady Chargers are 2-5 in district and 9-19 overall. They are scheduled to begin the second round of 26-5A action Wednesday at Wagner.

Champion was steady in Friday’s game and scored in double digits all four quarters, while keeping Seguin in single digits in the first and second stanzas.

The Lady Chargers were up 15-8 in the first and then outscored the Matadors in the second, 13-9, for the 28-17 halftime lead.

Seguin hit in double digits in the third and fourth quarters but so did the Chargers team that outscored them in both periods.

Champion won the third, 16-11, and then both teams had their best offensive quarters of the night in the fourth with the Chargers winning it 20-17 to take all four stanzas.

Hailey Winn had a strong game with 23 points, Ainsley Darter added 9, while Abby Sommer and Adriana Barreiro netted 8 points apiece.

Barreiro and Ainsley Darter both recorded 4 steals and Bralyn Gault and Taylor Burk came up with 3 steals each.

Barreiro finished with 10 assists, Ainsley Darter and Abby Sommer had 2 assists each, while Gault grabbed 11 rebounds and Winn, Addison Darter and Barreiro all collected 3 rebounds each.
