Eagles drop first district game of year

The Geneva boys basketball team dropped its first district game of the year last Friday when they hosted Corpus Christi Incarnate Word.

The Angels won the contest, 67-49 and drops Geneva to 17-6 overall and 4-1 in district. The Eagles were scheduled to play Austin Veritas Wednesday.

Geneva fell behind early and was playing “catch-up” the rest of the way, according to Coach Julius McNeal.

“Incarnate Word played well but I don’t feel like we came out with the same energy as IWA,” he said. “It’s a good game for the guys to learn from and to see that we’re going to get everyone’s best.”

The Eagles were trailing by 12 points at halftime, 35-23, and then the lead ballooned to 20 by the third quarter after the Angels outscored them, 18-10.

Geneva fought back in the fourth and mounted a comeback that saw them cut the lead to 9 but after a couple of Eagles fouled out, CC IW was able to get it back up to double digits and close it out.

Colton Lutz led the Eagles with 17 points, Wyatt Bruss added 13, Griffin Freiling netted 9, Jack Taylor scored 5, Noah Brunsvold tallied 4 and Jack Walker Harden hit a free throw.
