KERRY BARBOZA Sports Editor

Fredericksburg took Round 1 against the Boerne High girls when the two state powers clashed Friday night at Greyhound Gym.

The Battlin’ Billies overcame a slow start and went on to win Friday’s game, 33-28.

BHS and Fred will meet in Round 2 in the second round Feb. 6 and there might be a Round 3 like there has been the last three seasons in the region championship.

BHS coach Amy Ruede said their approach will be that Friday was just one game and they’ll see Fred at their place in the second round and hope to see them again in the playoffs.

The Lady Hounds are 23-4 overall and 4-2 in district. They had another tough one Wednesday when they host Davenport to begin the second round. The Wolves were the other team that beat Boerne in the first round.

Fred had a slow start Friday and only scored 3 points in the first quarter and were trailing 13-3 by the end of the period.

The Billies didn’t shoot it much better in the second and only netted 4 but Boerne slowed down as well and only scored 5 to give them an 18-7 lead at halftime.

Fredericksburg starting pressing in the second quarter and Ruede said the Billies pressure bothered her team.

Friday’s contest changed in the third quarter after the Battlin’ Billies heated up and matched the halftime score of 18-7 by winning the third quarter 18-7 to tie it up at 25-25 as the game went to the fourth.

Boerne couldn’t buy a bucket in the second half – literally. BHS didn’t convert a single basket in the final two quarters and all 10 of its second-half points came at the line.

The Lady Hounds were 7 of 10 at the line in the third and 3 for 6 in the fourth quarter to account for their 10 points.

It wasn’t that Boerne didn’t have any chances either, they missed on a couple shots around the rim that just didn’t go in.

Ruede pointed out they missed 9 free throws in a five-point loss. BHS was 14 for 23 from the foul line.

Averi Aaron led Boerne with 13 points and scored in all four quarters, Abby Smith scored 7, Jenna Ruede added 6, while Savannah Salinas and Addison Palluch hit one free throw each.

Coach Ruede shortened her rotation and only brought in two players off the bench as three players went all 32 minutes.
