Comfort Deer fall to Blanco, sting Yellowjackets in OT

The Deer basketball team fought hard but ultimately fell to the Blanco Lady Panthers Friday night by eight points.

With the loss the Deer fall to 7-16 overall and 1-2 in District 5-3A play. They traveled to Florence on Tuesday.

Prior to that, Comfort defeated Llano in overtime.

Vs. Blanco

Blanco won Friday’s contest, 36-28.

It was a slow first quarter for both and the Deer were up 5-3, but Blanco took the lead in the second and never trailed from there.

The Panthers won the second 12-5 and took a 15-10 lead into the break.

Blanco doubled up the Deer in the third, 12-6, for the 27-16 advantage. Comfort outscored the Panthers in the fourth quarter but only by three points, 12-9.

Katie Haffner paced the Deer with 16 points, Rachel Adams added 7 points, Tindall Ahrens dropped in 3 and Hannah Adams scored 2.

Ahrens had a team-high 8 rebounds, Jael Hernandez recorded 4 steals and 3 assists and Haffner came up with 3 assists.

Vs. Llano

The Comfort girls hosted Llano last Tuesday and came away with a 33-29 win in overtime.

Tuesday’s contest was tied at 25-25, and in the extra period, the Deer were able to double up the Lady Yellowjackets, 8-4, to record the 33-29 victory.

Last Tuesday’s game was back and forth until the extra period. Llano was up 8-5 after one period but Comfort won the second stanza, 7-5, and was trailing by a point at the break, 13-12.

The Yellowjackets took the third period, 9-7, and opened up a 22-19 lead as the game went to the fourth quarter but Comfort was able to catch them in the final period after outscoring them, 6-3, to knot it up at 25-25.

Once in OT, the Deer dropped in 8 and held Llano to 4 to get the win in the low-scoring game.

Rachel Adams led Comfort with 12 points and Jael Hernandez finished with 10, while Katie Haffner netted 8 as the trio combined for 30 of the team’s 33 points.

Danielle Ruelas tallied 2 and Hannah Adams hit a free throw as every point counted.

Haffner came up with 10 steals and 2 assists, while Tindall Ahrens recorded 7 rebounds and 6 steals.
