Boerne Champion put up a good fight against Smithson Valley during Tuesday’s district contest at Charger Gym, but the Lady Rangers just had too much firepower after nine of their players scored.
The result was a 61-45 win over the Lady Chargers to drop Champion to 1-5 in district and 8-18 overall.
They were at Seguin Friday to close out the first round of district. They’ll begin the second round of 26-5A action Tuesday at Wagner.
Champion kept it close early and tallied 10 points in the first but was trailing 15-10 when the second quarter started.
The Chargers knocked in a dozen points in the second but the Rangers outscored them, 18-12, and took a 33-22 lead into halftime.
Champion had its best scoring quarter of the night in the third with 16 points but Smithson Valley kept pace and tallied 15 to take a double digit lead into the final period, 48-38.
The Rangers pulled away in the fourth by outscoring the Chargers, 13-7.
Adriana Barreiro led Champion with 12 points, Hailey Winn added 11, Bralyn Gault scored 7, Taylor Burk finished with 5, Addison Darter and Abby Sommer both netted 3, while Ainsley Darter and Cris Ramon dropped in 2 points apiece.
Burk grabbed 10 rebounds, Barreiro dished out 3 assists and came up with 3 steals.
