Boerne High hosted Canyon Lake Tuesday and played its best half of the season during the first two quarters according to coach Kimble McHone.
The Greyhounds dropped in eight 3-pointers in the half and held a 37-13 lead at intermission after they limited the Hawks to 13 points (6 and 7 points) in the first quarter quarters.
BHS went on to post a 59-35 win for its 40th straight district win. The Hounds are 20-5 overall and 3-0 overall. They were at Fredericksburg Friday and visit Davenport Tuesday.
McHone said there was no doubt in his mind that this was Boerne’s best half of the season.
“By far it was our best,” he said. “I thought our ball movement was good and we shot the ball really well. We had a 20-point (first) quarter, we hadn’t done that in a while and we held them to 6 points.”
Boerne was up 20-6 after one and had drained four 3s in the quarter. They outscored the Hawks in the second stanza, 17-7, and drained four more 3s in the period with three coming from Noa Sanchez.
The Greyhounds only hit one 3 in the second half as they traded baskets with Canyon Lake after both teams scored 22 points over the final two periods.
Boerne’s defense played well and limited the Hawks to 10 made baskets in the game. Canyon Lake didn’t make more than three buckets in any of the four quarters.
“Our defense was really good, when we shoot the 3-ball like that it’s going to make the game easy for us,” McHone said.
The coach said they’ve pretty much settled on a rotation and added that it may have been one of the reasons for the team’s strong performance.
“This is the first time for two games in a row where we’ve had the same rotation,” he said. “We’re starting to settle in, who our starters are and who’s coming in off the bench.”
Nic Hernandez led the Hounds with 15 points and hit three 3s, Sanchez added 9 points, all from the 3-point line, Casen Hoegemeyer finished with 7 and hit a 3, Sam Holland tallied 12 points and knocked in a pair of 3s, Luke Fox added 6 points, Slade Salinas scored 4, Julien Hartman had 3, Gavin Hankins netted 2 and Hank Hendrix hit a free throw.
Holland grabbed 5 rebounds, Hendrix dished out 3 assists and Hernandez came up with 5 steals.
