New year brings fitness, harmony to Comfort area

COMFORT CHAMBER CHAT

By now many of you have put away Christmas. Hopefully, the spirit of that wonderful season will stay with us and guide our days and weeks until it again becomes a reality on the calendar!

So here we are in January, having welcomed the New Year and ready to start fresh ... at something.

What about fitness? That can be an unwelcome word, especially if we are feeling a bit guilty about dietary indiscretions over the holidays. Well, dispel the guilt -- that does no one any good -- and think about fitness as simply a good habit, year round.

Comfort is home to Lyons Fitness Classes that provide a great opportunity to get in shape around your schedule. Here’s what you need to know: Karie Lyons teaches her fitness classes Monday through Thursday from 8:30-9:30 am, in the pavilion at Comfort Park.

There is plenty of room to move around and out of the weather. The cost is $50/month for unlimited sessions. Come as often as you can.

Karie focuses on muscle building, cardio and stretching. Every Wednesday you can enjoy a cardio dance class, and once a month you will be treated to a session of yoga. So, give this some serious thought and call Karie at 830-358-2006.

Speaking of Yoga, there is also Blue Heron Yoga, at 22A U.S. Highway 87. Owner Rosie Meier teaches classes at different times Monday through Friday, focusing on joints, muscles and mind-body balance. For more information, call her at 830-431-2656.

And don’t forget there are several nice spots in Comfort to enjoy a cup of coffee, tea or something more filling after your workout. We have The Wander’n Calf Espresso Bar and Scratch Bakery at 817 Front St., The Lobby Coffee Shop at 523 Seventh St., Comfort Coffee just inside the 8th Street Market at 523 Eighth St., and Hens & Heifers at 625 High St.

The next item to consider for your January calendar is of a serious and sobering nature. There is a nonprofit organization here called Drug Free Comfort, and those folks have teamed up with Comfort ISD, the Comfort Area Foundation, Hill Country Family Services, and the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office to offer a presentation on the lethal dangers of fentanyl.

Entitled “One Pill Can Kill,” former DEA special agent Rick Goodrich will discuss this dangerous drug and what folks who have relationships with young people ought to know.

The program will take place on Wednesday, January 31, from 6-7 p.m. at the Lobby Coffee Shop; complimentary light refreshments will be served. There is no fee and no reservations are required. All are welcome.

And now for something entertaining, and it happens at Cave Without a Name. Admittedly, this is a column about what’s going on in Comfort, and yes, Cave Without A Name has a Boerne address.

Still, it’s accessible from Comfort, too, out in the country between our two towns, so we will claim it for Comfort this time.

The notable event in January is a program by a musical duo who call themselves Acoustic Eidolon Experience, featuring cello and double neck guitar.

I suspect few of us have ever heard, or heard of, of a double neck guitar. It’s an amazing looking instrument whose sounds blend beautifully with the cello.

The concert takes place on Saturday, January 27 beginning at 7 p.m. at Cave Without A Name -- which is another amazing phenomenon in and of itself – at 325 Kreutzberg Road.

Tickets are available in advance for $35, $40 at the door, and may be purchased online.

So as the dust settles on all things Christmas, it’s time to come to Comfort and parts surrounding it, for there is always much to see and do as you find Comfort in Texas. ‘Till next time.
