LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Editor:
We have lived in the Boerne area for the past 36 years. We have patronized a specific bakery for special occasions -- birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and holidays.
During the holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) of all these years, we kept the pies/cakes on a kitchen shelf so guests could sample whenever they liked.
Obviously, the part of the products would remain unrefrigerated up to five days. There was never any problems with mold nor decreases in flavor. We have been satisfied and pleased with their service.
This all changed this past Christmas.
We picked up five pies (coconut, apple, pecan, pumpkin) on the afternoon of December 23. On Christmas Day, we noticed that the two coconut pies tasted a bit old; especially the meringue. But they were consumed by the evening of the 25th.
When the pumpkin pie was opened on the afternoon of December 26, it was covered with mold colonies – from 1 to 4 mm in diameter. That pie was discarded.
The remainder of the holiday season was ruined because there was a lack of desserts for the remaining meals – guests left December 30.
When told about the incident, the bakery refused to believe us and wanted us to return the moldy pumpkin pie. They blamed us for not putting the pies in the refrigerator.
For 30-plus years pies we have received remained edible, without refrigeration. Why would we think there should be a change this year.
If refrigeration was needed this year, the bakery staff should have a sign posted stating that, or at least be stated as a reminder as the pies were being passed out.
The situation was never resolved. We will no longer order bakery products from this business and will emphatically discourage others from patronizing them.
Sad. One bad experience blotted out the good experiences.
