CELEBRATING THE ARTS
PAULA HORNER HCCARTS
It was many years ago that I first met Patricia Sparks, Boerne Art League’s Artist for the Month of January. She immediately brings a sense of calm to the room, and a smile to one’s face.
She is a kind gentle woman, so I admit being a tad bit surprised when her advice to living a long and happy life was blunt, and to the point, “Get off your butt, and do something!”
Given a box camera as a child, Sparks gives this gift full credit for developing her artistic eye. She honed her talent through years of portrait photographs taken of the family’s ranch animals, including each of the chickens.
Sparks’ creative energies expanded while in school, as she experimented with watercolor, then oil painting, where she finally found her passion.
As most artists are prone to do, Sparks remains ever vigilant in seeking out the perfect locations to paint. Her process is to capture photographs with her iPhone, searching her ranches for yet another perfect painting spot.
Sixth generation of strong Texas men and women, Sparks is herself the picture of grace. She has also authored several books tracing her family’s genealogy.
We urge you to seek out Sparks’ “Other Walls” exhibition at Boerne’s Main Street banks, and the Kronkosky Center, now affectionately referred to as The Center, 17 Old San Antonio Road, Boerne.

Session 1: Quilled Vessel, Jan. 16. The ancient art of rolled paper. Practice forming paper into delicate swirled motifs.
We will fashion a small bowl from colorful quilled paper shapes. Work with quilling tools and techniques, glues and mediums, armatures and design principles.
Jewelry Components, Jan. 23. In the first part of this basic components class, we will work on earrings.
The series will focus on fabricating your own clasps, ear wires, head pins, and connectors using traditional jewelers’ tools and non-ferrous wire.
Explore wire gauge, metal hardness, and finishing. For our earrings, we will form ear wires, paddle head pins, and wrapped dangles.
Apoxie Clay Carved Pendant, Jan. 30. Fill a metal bezel with your unique focal piece.
In the tradition of aboriginal bone carvings, shape Apoxie clay, apply a color coat, and complete a carved design.
Materials and techniques involve working with 2-part Apoxie clay, adding colorants to the medium, understanding the working stages in curing, and carving techniques.
Mixed Media Frame, Feb. 6 and Feb. 13. Build up layers of mixed media to create an original picture frame. Mimic old-world carving through embellishments, paint, paper, medium, and building wax.
The first class lays down a structural base while the second class focuses on paint and wax finishing. If you enjoy playing with texture and color, this class offers techniques transferable to any home décor project.
