The start of the New Year wasn’t kind to the Comfort Deer as they traveled to Hondo and lost its first game of 2024, 43-17.
With the loss the Deer finish the non-district part of the schedule with a record of 6-14. The Deer started District 5-3A play on Friday at Brady.
Comfort had a slow start and was trailing Hondo, 12-4, at the end of one. The Owls also won the second quarter, 10-4, for the 22-8 halftime lead.
The Deer really struggled in the third and didn’t score, while Hondo dropped in 11 to open up a 33-8 lead. Comfort played better in the fourth and had their best scoring quarter of the night with 9 points but was still outscored by the Owls, 10-9.
Katie Haffner led the Deer with 7 points, Jael Hernandez scored 4, while Danielle Ruelas, Hannah Adams and Rachel Adams all netted 2.
Hannah Adams grabbed 7 rebounds, Tindall Ahrens snagged 6 boards and Rachel Adams tallied 5 rebounds.
Haffner came up with 4 steals and Hernandez dished out 3 assists.
NOTES: The Comfort girls were scheduled to play Leakey on Dec. 29, but that game was canceled. Leakey has a new coach and she double booked for that day. They were at the Menard Tournament the day they were supposed to play Comfort.
