Charger boys, girls teams tangle with Tivy

The Champion boys basketball team started the new year just like they ended the old one – with a victory.

Champion picked up a win at New Braunfels Canyon to open district play last Saturday and then began 2024 with a road victory at Kerrville Tivy last Tuesday.

The Chargers edged the Cougars, 45-41, and then took a tight one over Tivy, 61-56, to start district at 2-0. They are 19-3 overall and hosted Pieper Friday.

The Champion girls hosted Tivy on Tuesday and fell to the Lady Antlers, 57-40. They are 1-3 in district and 8-16 overall.

Quinn Grable shot it well and knocked down five 3-pointers on 5 of 11 shooting from beyond the arc on his way to 23 points to lead the Chargers.

Mason Wyatt added 12 points, Brigg Jones scored 7, Baeden Burdick netted 6, Kristian Herrera tallied 5, Charlie Georgelos chipped in with 4, while Louis Hudspeth and Logan Scott both dropped in 2.

Georgelos and Jones snagged 5 rebounds each and Burdick dished out 4 assists.

Vs. NB Canyon

Briggs Jones paced Champion with 14 points, Quinn Grable scored 10 and Mason Wyatt netted 9, while Charlie Georgelos had 7, Baeden Burdick dropped in 4 points and Logan Scott hit a free throw.

Grable had team-high honors in rebounds and assists after he collected 6 boards and dished out 2 dimes.

The Champion girls were tripped up by the Lady Antlers Tuesday in Boerne, 57-40.

After visiting Pieper Friday, the Lady Chargers are home Tuesday to host Smithson Valley and then play at Seguin next Friday to close out the first round of district.
