The Boerne High boys broke open a close game against Wimberley with a strong second half during Tuesday’s district opener at Greyhound Gym.
It was tied 19-19 at halftime but the Greyhounds outscored the Texans in the second half, 28-15, and went on to record the 47-34 victory.
BHS is 18-5 overall and 1-0 in district. The Greyhounds continued district action Friday at Navarro. They’ll host Canyon Lake Tuesday.
Boerne’s win gives them 38 straight district wins. They are closing in on the mark of 44 straight that was set a few years back when BHS coach Kimble McHone’s son Griffin was on the team from about 2010-14.
“That that says a lot about our kids, when you think about how much you have to get up for every game,” the coach said.
McHone said their defense tilted the game in their direction.
“I think early on we were nervous, a young team playing in their first district game. We took good shots, and we were aggressive, we just couldn’t get anything to go in but as the game wore on, I think we loosened up and scored enough to win but it was our defense that won the game,” he said. “We held a team that’s averaging over 60 points to 34.”
BHS limited Wimberley’s top outside shooter Ethan Sharp to just 3 points on 1 of 6 shooting, although Paul Gumbert-Mendoza had a solid game and tallied 21 of Wimberley’s 34 points.
“(Gumbert-Mendoza) did a heck of a job getting to the freethrow line but I think late in the fourth quarter we did a good job of finally keeping him out of the paint and that helped us,” McHone said.
McHone added that as winners of the last three regional titles, he and his players know they are going to get the other team’s best shot.
“We talk about that nonstop, 100 percent. Even though this is a team that had nothing to do with all that,” McHone said. “Very few of these guys were on those teams and if they were on the team they really didn’t play that much, but when Boerne comes to town, we’re going to get everybody’s best shot. It is what it is and we just have to be ready.”
Casen Hoegemeyer led the Hounds with 14 points on Tuesday and had a strong second half. Hoegemeyer scored 11 of his 14 over the final two periods and scored 8 in the fourth.
Nic Hernandez tallied 10 in the game and finished with 5 points in the fourth as he and Hoegemeyer scored 13 of their 14 points in the final stanza.
Sam Holland tallied 8 points, Hank Hendrix helped spark the team in the third and scored all 7 of his points in the quarter, Slade Salinas added 4 points, while Julien Hartman and Luke Fox tallied 2 points apiece.
McHone said it was a good victory.
“We definitely have some stuff we have to clean up but overall I’m very happy with them and with the win,” he said.
