The Boerne boys basketball team went into the Christmas break by dropping its last two games.
Southside slipped by BHS last Monday and then Poth defeated the Greyhounds Tuesday in Boerne in overtime.
The Hounds fall to 14-4 and were off until the Boerne ISD Tournament scheduled for Dec. 27-28.
Vs. Poth
The Pirates were down double digits early in the game but rallied to tie it and then defeat the Greyhounds in OT, 53-47.
Boerne struggled from the outside and at the freethrow line in Monday’s contest.
The Hounds went 4 for 19 from the 3-point line for 21 percent and were 3 for 12 at the charity stripe for 25 percent.
Still, Boerne held a 14-4 lead at the end of one and took a 23-15 advantage into the break.
Poth started to rally in the third and outscored BHS, 16-11, and the lead was down to three at 34-31 when the fourth quarter started.
The Pirates caught Boerne early in the fourth quarter and it was back and forth from that point on. There were eight ties or lead changes down the stretch with the final tie coming at 42-42 with five seconds left on a Hank Hendrix basket.
Poth still had some time but didn’t score, so it went to overtime.
The Pirates started the extra period with a 4-0 run but Sam Holland cut the lead to within one at 46-45 with a 3-pointer. Poth answered with a 2-pointer and it was 48-45.
Holland again helped Boerne respond with a 2-pointer and the Poth lead was down to a point at 48-47 with a minute left, but that’s as close as the Hounds would get.
Boerne had to start fouling and then missed its final two shots. The Pirates scored the final five points and outscored BHS in overtime, 11-6.
Holland led the team with 16 points and scored all five of Boerne points in OT. Hendrix finished with 11 and Nic Hernandez netted 10. Casen Hoegemeyer tallied 7 and Luke Fox chipped in with 3 as only five Greyhounds scored in the game.
Hoegemeyer, Holland and Cash McPeak all snagged 5 rebounds, Hoegemeyer came up with 5 steals, Hendrix dished out 4 assists and had a block, while Julien Hartman also blocked a shot.
Vs. Southside
Southside took advantage of a slow third quarter by Boerne on Monday and beat the Greyhounds, 49-45.
The Hounds were leading 22-17 at halftime but struggled in the third period and only scored 4 points, while the Cardinals had their best quarter of the night with 18 points.
When the stanza was over, Southside held a 35-26 lead. Boerne tried to rally in the fourth quarter as six different players scored. They outscored the Cardinals, 19-14, but couldn’t catch Southside.
The Cardinals were 8 for 10 at the line in the fourth quarter to maintain its lead. Boerne went to the line 15 times in the final period and made nine free throws.
Sam Holland led the team with 12 points, Casen Hoegemeyer added 11 points, Slade Salinas scored 7, Noa Sanchez had 6, Nic Hernandez netted 4 points, Luke Fox hit a 3 and Hank Hendrix chipped in with 2.
Holland grabbed 9 rebounds and Fox dished out 4 assists.
