Work on Boerne’s River Road stabilization project has passed the midway mark and will soon include some upbank, cosmetic improvement that park enthusiasts will begin to notice.
The bulk of the work completed has been in the bowl of the creek, according to Chris Shadrock, Boerne communications director. Phase one of the project focused on rebuilding and stabilizing the riverbank.
Phase two, he said, “will be the things people can see; the planting of vegetation, replacing some of the sidewalk that had been cracked, irrigation work, a lot of cosmetic stuff” once the bank stabilization is complete.
The $2.63 million project is still on target for a March 24 completion date, despite recent rains and wet conditions. “They did build in some rain days, but it has not bumped back the completion date of the project,” he added The city is using $2 million from the city’s parks fund, and $600,000 from capital improvement funds to cover the project, which began in September.
The stabilization project will provide more clearly defined pedestrian access to the creek, with a buffer space between the sidewalk and the creek bank to maintain the creek edge. Thousands of native plants and vegetation will be planted to improve stormwater runoff, according to the city’s website link for the project.
Once completed, a new 250-foot pedestrian boardwalk and three additional fishing piers will be open for public use.
Work to stabilize and rebuild the banks of Cibolo Creek in Boerne has passed the halfway point, with a target date of March 24 for project completion.
