Tigers pull away from Lady Chargers in third quarter

Boerne Champion hosted Floresville Friday for a non-district girls basketball game and the Lady Tigers prevailed after a strong third quarter.

Floresville went on to win the contest, 45-37, to drop Champion to 5-11 overall. The Lady Chargers hosted Wagner Tuesday to open 26-5A action and visit Veterans Memorial Friday.

Last Friday’s contest was slow going early on. Champion was winning 7-5 at the end of the first quarter and then Floresville won the second period 8-6 and it was tied at 13-13 at halftime.

Floresville came out and turned in a strong third quarter that tilted the momentum their way. The Lady Tigers doubled up the Lady Chargers 20-10 and opened up a 33-23 lead when the third ended.

Champion had its best-scoring quarter of the night in the fourth and tallied 14 points, but Floresville kept pace and knocked in 12 to get the 8-point win.

Adriana Barreiro was the only Lady Greyhound in double digits and finished with 10 points, Addison Darter had a good night from the 3-point line and sank three 3s for 9 points, Abby Sommer hit a 3 and tallied 7 points, Hailey Winn scored 5 points, Taylor Burk and Bralyn Gault netted 2 points apiece, while Cris Ramon and Kayla Ramirez both hit one free throw.

Champion was good on the boards and outrebounded Floresville 39-28. Gault grabbed 9 rebounds, Barreiro had 8 boards, Ainsley Darter tallied 3 assists and 2 steals, while Gault and Barreiro also came up with 2 steals each.
