Fair Oaks Ranch voters have chosen Ruben Olvara as their newest city council member.
Olvara, 44, a member of the Fair Oaks Ranch Municipal Development District board of directors, received 489 of the 570 votes cast, 85.7% of the vote. His opponent, Vincent Caldarola, received just 81 votes, 14.2% of the vote.
Olvara, an attorney with Farmer, House, Osuna & Olvera, assumes Place 3 on City Council. He replaces former Councilwoman Michelle Bliss, whose resignation for personal reasons was accepted on September 22 of this year.
Olvara was born and raised in Laredo, Texas, but also spent time growing up in the Corpus Christi area. He attended Texas A&M University where he received a bachelor's degree in political science in 2001.
He then attended South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas where he received his law degree in 2005. While in law school, Olvara was a South Texas Academic Merit Scholarship recipient, was on the Dean’s Honor List, and a member of the Phi Delta Phi International Law Fraternity.
After practicing law in Houston and San Antonio for several years, Olvara joined Farmer, House, Osuna & Olvara in May 2015 and became a Partner in January 2018. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas, San Antonio Bar Association, and Defense Counsel of San Antonio.
Olvara and his wife, Lesley, a teacher at Voss Middle School in the Boerne ISD, have two children, and they attend St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.
Once votes are canvassed, Olvara will assume Place 3 at the Dec. 21 Fair Oaks Ranch City Council meeting. He will serve out the remainder of Bliss’s three-year term, which expires in 2025. Then Olvara can determine whether he will seek election to a full three-year term.
Just 6.2% of Fair Oaks Ranch’s 9,077 registered voters went to the polls or participated in early voting. Olvara took the early vote and election day in all three polling counties, capturing between 84% and 88% of the vote in each.
