Cozy mysteries set the mood for winter

Does the thought of curling up under a warm blanket with a cup of tea and a cozy mystery appeal to you? If so, please read on.

Here you’ll find novels featuring coffee, tea, cute towns and villages, indie bookstores, and people that have no professional experience as detectives running around solving murders.

Eryn Scott is the author of several mystery series, including the “Whispers and Words” series. These books are set in the small town of Button, Washington, where even the streets have sewing themed names.

Whispers and Words is a combination bookstore and cat adoption destination. In each novel, bookstore owner Louisa Henry finds herself embroiled in a new murder mystery, and she and her good friend Willa do their best to solve the case.

“A Tail of Woe,” is the fifth book in this series. It’s set in December and involves the murder of the town Scrooge. The library has the first eight books in this series in print and on the mystery shelves.

“Chapter and Curse” is the first book in the “Cambridge Bookshop Series,” set in England. American Molly Kimball and her mother move to Cambridge to help relatives run the very old and quaint Thomas Marlowe Bookshop.

During a reading at the shop by a local poet, a murder of the town blackmailer occurs. In between eating lots of crumpets and drinking many cups of coffee and tea, and of course running a bookstore, Molly and her friends have their hands full tracking down those in Cambridge that were being blackmailed.

This title is available as an e-audiobook in the Cloud Library system.

If you like cozies in a Southern setting, you might try “Murder at the Bookstore,” by Sue Minix.

This book is the first in a series set in South Carolina. Mystery author Jen Dawson returns to her hometown and quickly finds a second home at her local indie bookstore.

When the owner of the bookstore is murdered, the protagonist is pulled into the events and has the task of attempting to solve a real mystery, instead of writing one.

This title is also available as an e-audiobook through the Cloud Library.

The “Flora Steele” mysteries by Merryn Allingham are set in the 1950s in the fictional English village of Abbymead. Bookshop owner Flora Steele solves mysteries with the help of a local crime writer.

There are seven books in this series so far, and the library has all of them in print and on the mystery shelves.

Happy reading to you, and happy holidays from the Patrick Heath Public Library.
