The Boerne High girls won Tuesday’s non-district basketball game with a bucket at the buzzer to defeat Wagner in a battle of state-ranked teams.
Boerne’s Meredith McCloud sank a 2-pointer before the clock hit 0:00 to help the Lady Greyhounds defeat the Thunderbirds, 44-43.
Boerne is No. 8 in the state in the 4A rankings, while Wagner is No. 5 in the state in the 5A rankings, according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.
The Lady Greyhounds are 14-2 overall and were off Friday. They return to action Tuesday when they open district play at Davenport.
The Thunderbirds were leading 43-42 but Boerne had the ball and inbounded with 3.4 seconds. McCloud put up a shot that was deflected, but teammate Savannah Salinas managed to tip the ball back to McCloud, who put the ball through the hoop before the buzzer sounded for the win.
Tuesday’s game was close throughout. Wagner was leading by a point at the end of one at 9-8 but BHS tied it by halftime at 21-21 after they won the second quarter by a point, 13-12.
The Lady Hounds outscored Wagner in the third 15-10 and opened up a 36-31 advantage but Wagner tallied 12 in the fourth and retook the lead.
Boerne only had 6 points in the final stanza until McCloud hit the game winner as the team finished with 8 in the quarter, enough to get the victory.
BHS did well on the boards and outrebounded Wagner 37-22 to overcome 20 turnovers.
Abby Smith led the Lady Hounds in scoring with 15 points, McCloud and Jenna Ruede both netted 9, Salinas scored 6, Chloe Donnell added 4 and Addison Palluch hit a free throw.
McCloud also pulled down 11 rebounds, Ruede had 8 rebounds and 3 assists and Donnell came up with 2 steals.
