Chanukah, the Festival of Lights; local celebration Monday

GUEST COMMENTARY

RABBI YOSSI MARRUS

CHABAD OF BOERNE

In beautiful Boerne, where the stars seem to shine a bit brighter against the vast Texan sky, the Festival of Lights takes on a special significance in these trying and dark times.

Chanukah begins the evening of December 7 and continues for eight nights, concluding on December 15. The Menorah (candelabra) is lit, adding one flame each night, concluding with all candles lit on the final night of the holiday.

Chanukah celebrates the miraculous victory of a small band of Jews against the mighty Syrian Greeks in 165 BCE. Upon recapturing the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, the candelabra was kindled with the final vial of pure oil. Miraculously, it burned for eight days.

In the face of challenges that cast shadows over our lives with devastating news from Israel, the story of Chanukah echoes with a timeless message of perseverance and triumph against all odds.

The flickering candles remind us that even in the darkest moments, a single spark can dispel the shadows and bring forth a renewed sense of purpose.

As we light the menorah, let us remember that each candle represents not only the past victories of the Maccabees but also the enduring power within each one of us to overcome obstacles. Each flame of the menorah is one of resilience, hope, and unity within our community.

As we gather to celebrate Chanukah in the heart of the Lone Star State, let the flames of the menorah not only illuminate the night but also ignite a flame of resilience, hope, and unity within our community.

The traditions of Chanukah encourage us to find light even in unexpected places. Let the Festival of Lights inspire us to extend that warmth to those around us.

Whether it’s through acts of kindness, words of encouragement, or gestures of solidarity, may we be the light that brightens the lives of others.

Happy Chanukah, Boerne. May your nights be filled with the warmth of community, the glow of hope, and the enduring light of resilience.

The community is invited to the annual Boerne Chanukah celebration that will begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday in Main Plaza.
