Comfort boys go 2-2 at Harper tournament

The Comfort boys basketball team was entered in the Harper Tournament and split its four games. They picked up one of their wins against host Harper in overtime on Saturday.

At the conclusion of the tournament the Cats’ record stands at 4-3. They welcomed Marion Tuesday before hosting the Comfort Bobcat Invitational this coming weekend.

Comfort opened with a 59-55 loss to San Marcos Home School last Thursday.

SMHS was up at halftime 23-21 after winning the first quarter, 12-10, and then both teams tallied 11 in the second.

The home school started to pull away in the third after they outscored the Bobcats 20-13 to open up the 43-34 lead.

Comfort made a strong push in the fourth and took the final stanza, 21-16, but it wasn’t enough to catch the San Marcos school.

Jovani Zapata led Comfort with 18 points, Jaydin Steward scored 16, Jackson Dear finished with 6, Gio Lopez and Santos Hernandez both netted 4, Jared Valadez hit for 3, while Joel Lozano and Terick Rodriguez finished with 2 points apiece.

Up next, the Bobcats continue play Thursday with a 55-33 win over Eldorado.

The Cats were very consistent in the first half and tallied 15 points in the first and second quarters. They jumped out to a 15-8 lead in the first and then outscored the city of gold in the second 15-6 for the 30-14 lead.

Comfort won the third, 14-11, and then took the fourth, 11-8, to outscore Eldorado in all four quarters.

Joel Lozano and Santos Hernandez led the Cats with 12 points each, Jackson Dear added 8, Jovani Zapata finished with 7, Jaydin Steward tallied 6, Jared Valadez netted 5, Aidan Schwarz and Gio Lopez chipped in with 2 and Daniel Adams hit a free throw.

Comfort returned on Friday and were rocked by Rocksprings, 66-52.

Rocksprings was winning 22-9 after the first quarter but Comfort took the second period, 16-10, and the lead was down to 32-25 at halftime.

Rocksprings won the final two quarters, 18-16 and 16-11, to wrap up a 14-point win.

Jaydin Steward led Comfort with 14 points, Joel Lozano added 13, Santos Hernandez scored 8, Jackson Dear and Jovani Zapata netted 5 apiece, Jared Valadez had 4 and Aidan Schwarz came up with 3.

Comfort’s final contest was the most exciting of the tourney for the Bobcats as they went to overtime to beat Harper, 62-55.

Comfort was up 12-9 and then outscored the Longhorns in the second, 20-16, to hold a 32-25 halftime lead.

Harper started its comeback in the third and won the third, 13-11, and the Bobcat lead was down to 43-38 by the end of the period.

The Longhorns made up the 5-point deficit in the fourth quarter after outscoring the Cats, 15-10, to tie it up at 53-53.

Once it went to OT, it was all Comfort after the Bobcats outscored the Horns, 9-2.

Jovani Zapata and Jaydin Steward dropped in 18 points apiece, Joel Lozano added 12, Jackson Dear and Santos Hernandez both scored 5 and Jared Valadez chipped in with 4.
