Lady Chargers at Jimmy K Classic tournament

The Boerne Champion girls basketball team was entered in its second tournament of the year last weekend after the Lady Chargers took part in the Jimmy K Classic in New Braunfels.

Champion posted a 1-3 mark at the tournament and stands at 5-10 overall. The Lady Chargers are off until Friday when they host Floresville and look to cage the Lady Tigers.

Champion opened with a 56-33 loss to New Braunfels last Thursday. The Char- gers fell behind in the first quarter, 15-8, but matched the Unicorns in the second, 9-9, and trailed at the break, 24-17.

NB started to pull away in the third by winning the quarter, 19-5, and opened up a 43-22 advantage. The Unicorns also took the fourth period, 13-11.

Hailey Winn had a strong game for the Chargers and finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds, both team highs.

Abby Sommer scored 5 and Jenna Koepke finished with 4 points, Adriana Barreiro recorded 7 assists and 2 steals, while Taylor Burk came up with 2 steals.

Champion returned on Friday and crushed Cedar Creek, 75-44.

The Chargers were only leading by a point after one, 9-8 but finished with three strong quarters.

Champion outscored Cedar Creek in the second, 24-8, for the 33-16 halftime lead.

Champion won the third, 21-9, and the fourth, 21-19, to get the win.

The Chargers had three in double digits after Addison Darter tallied 15, Abby Sommer scored 13 and Adriana Barreiro netted 11, while Jenna Koepke finished with 9.

Barreiro made it a double- double with 10 assists, while Kayla Ramirez had 4 assists. Barreiro also came up with 7 steals, Ainsley Darter came up with 4 steals, Addison Darter and Kayla Ramirez both recorded 3 steals.

Ainsley Darter grabbed 6 rebounds, Cris Ramon and Bralyn Gault both snagged 4 boards.

Later on Friday Champion fell to Round Rock, 64-43.

RR started out strong and held a 24-11 advantage by the end of the first. Champion matched them in the second with 14 points and went into the break trailing, 38-25.

Round Rock outscored the Chargers in the third, 17-7, and opened up a 55-32 advantage.

Champion closed it out by winning the fourth quarter, 11-9.

Abby Sommer paced the Chargers with 9 points, Ainsley Darter scored 8, while Hailey Winn, Addison Darter and Adriana Barreiro all netted 6.

Barreiro dished out 4 assists, while Winn came up with 7 rebounds, Bralyn Gault collected 5 rebounds and Ainsley Darter grabbed 4 boards.

Champion returned on Saturday for its final game of the tourney and played MacArthur. The Lady Brahmas won the contest 60-48 after both teams had a fast start.

Mac was winning 21-18 when the first quarter ended and then outscored the Chargers in the second, 12-11, for the 33-29 lead.

Both teams tallied 11 in the third and the Brahmas were still up by four at 44-40 when the game went to the final stanza.

It was in the fourth quarter that Mac attacked and doubled up the Chargers, 16-8, to secure the win.

Hailey Winn led Champion in scoring with 12 points, Bralyn Gault and Abby Sommer both added 7 points.
